To me the celebrity obsession is due to the fact that most people are dreamers in the world with a dose of rationality. Most people while dreaming of spectacular success and achieving celebrity status also wear a small hat of reality, which constantly tell them that 'you cannot do what you are thinking...this stuff is not for you.' So, the reality is biting and therefore, people find respite to really crave up to media gossips and celebrity news. If these news were not there and crazy celebrity stunts were not pulled, the world would have become really boring and people would not know how to respond to the mundane life that most the subjected to.

My view is a little more sinister...based on my belief that all media content (particularly TV) serves one or more of only three core psychological needs (escape [i.e., science fiction], embarrassment [i.e., my life is better than yours...like The Jerry Springer Show] and edification [i.e., I care about important stuff!...like all Discovery content], I think the current obsession with celebrity news centers on our need to reconcile our celebrity obsessions with our core belief that we are all 'equal' (or, conversely, that we can all achieve anything). This tension, I believe, causes us to be unusually interested in celebrity foibles, failures, relationships, births, marriages and anything else universally 'human.'

Good article...

My 2cents: The social networking space will continue to fragment...there will be room for many different players catering to different needs....needs driven by diverse demo, social and psycho desires...my question: can the networks ever interact?

I started out with Livejournal, then Friendster, MySpace and now I am migrating to Facebook. MySpace has obvious problems, it's overloaded, way too much advertising, spam, unknown bands want to be my friend, it's poorly designed and I feel it's dominated by 14 year olds.

Facebook on the other hand, has a nice clean design, it works 99% of the time, less advertising, no 14 year olds and it's consistent - no custom profiles to crash your browser. I think Facebook needs to work on it's navigation I find it gives you the run around at times.

I'm all about Facebook but I worry over time it will become like MySpace. We shall see.

That is a very interesting article. As an '07 College graduate, I use both Myspace and Facebook. For me, and many of my friends Facebook is the preferred site simply because it is cleaner, and the ads are less risque. Personally I think this is one of the biggest draws to Facebook. Since it seems that Facebook is drawing more and more people, there could be plenty of opportunity for more and more advertisers to use it as a vehicle to deliver their messages. The question is whether or not facebook is going to open themselves up to this. If so, I think Facebook could subject themselves to losing some users.
